After seven years of work, the Outer Bay galleries open to the public. Swirling anchovies welcome visitors to the world of delicate drifters and sleek swimmers of the open ocean. Stunning live exhibits with galleries that use special lighting and music create a sense of immersion in the open ocean. In September 1997, the Outer Bay exhibit is named the best new Aquarium and zoo exhibit of the year by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.Drifting AlongIn the Drifters Gallery, visitors are mesmerized by brilliant orange sea nettles, by the shimmering rainbow effects of the comb jellies and by watching the nearly transparent crystal jellies disappear in changing light. Our designers construct special accommodations to fit the needs of our delicate drifters: exhibits with cold temperatures and gentle currents devised to prevent jellies from being trapped in corners or on the bottom. Across the hall, Flippers, Flukes and Fun focuses on marine mammalsand kids. It is filled with innovative hands-on displays for younger children to enjoy, and foreshadows the immensely popular Splash Zone exhibit. |
